OUR TRIP TO ITALY WITH RICK STEVES
For a breath of fresh air, beautiful colors, and lovely aromas, we walked to the Campo di Fiori (field of flowers) flower market. Campo di Fiori is a rectangular square south of Piazza Navona. In the Middle Ages the area was a meadow.
The area has quite a history. Executions used to be held publicly in Campo di Fiori. Here, on 17 February 1600, the philosopher Giordano Bruno was burnt alive for heresy, and all of his works were placed on the Index of Forbidden Books by the Holy Office.
In addition to people, the Holy Office burned the Talmud following the Bragadin-Giustiniani dispute in Campo di Fiori on 9 September 1553, the first day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year.
